Unpopular Opinions Tag

Firstly, I need to apologise for being so inactive for most of November! I’m here now though and I thought what better way to jump back in to blogging than by revealing some of my unpopular opinions. Because it’s always fun to share those heh heh. But really this tag is one of my favourites to read on other people’s blogs because I feel like opinions that differ from your own are far more interesting to hear about than those that you agree with. So here’s mine, hope you enjoy!

1) A Popular Book Or Series That You Didn’t Like

I’m so tempted to say Uprooted by Naomi Novik but I’ve already moaned about that book quite a bit on here and my bookstagram. So I’ll choose…Delirium by Lauren Oliver. Remember how popular this series was back in 2012?! So many people adored it and it still has an average rating of 4.0 on goodreads now. No idea how?! It was honestly one of the most slow and boring books I’ve ever read. And so obviously I didn’t continue with the rest of the series.

Oh but wasn’t there rumours of a tv series at one point though? And it was going to star Emma Roberts?

2) A Popular Book Or Series That Everyone Else Seems To Hate But You Love

Ok, so looking through the books that I’ve rated 5 stars on goodreads, the least popular out of them is Austenland and Midnight In Austenland by Shannon Hale. I loved both of these books and I REALLY hope Shannon writes more. They’re just fun, fast paced and light reads. Nothing too serious. And I’m fascinated by the Pride and Prejudice era so throwing some modern people into this time amuses me greatly.

3) A Love Triangle Where The Main Character Ended Up With The Person You Did NOT Want Them To End Up With

SPOILERS FOR EMPIRE OF STORMS…

Manon and Elide! And I know, I know, they were never even close to being a couple but the way Manon is so protective of Elide and doesn’t like Lorcan is so cute. But as that’s clearly not happening I can accept that Elide and Lorcan were lovely together.

However I refuse to accept Manon and Dorian being together. And as much as I like Dorian he’s just not right for Manon. Manon is so scary and strong and a natural leader and he just kind of dulls that. Which I did not like.

4) A Popular Book Genre That You Hardly Reach For

I’m going to have to say young adult contemporary. I’ve only read a handful and for the most part they’ve all lacked well developed, likeable characters. And usually the plot is non existent. I did like Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson and The Fault In Our Stars by John Green though!

5) A Popular Or Beloved Character That You Do Not Like

Tyrion from Game Of Thrones. Of course I still think he’s one of the most interesting characters in the ASOIAF series and he’s witty and clever. It’s just I can’t get over some of the things he’s done in the book/tv series. And whilst I like tv series Tyrion better than book series Tyrion, I have to say I wish book series Tyrion especially would just die.

6) A Popular Author You Can’t Seem To Get Into

Leigh Bardugo. I suffered through Six of Crows and I plan on making myself suffer through Crooked Kingdom very soon (though I’m hoping I don’t suffer at all of course and that I end up loving it). And why even bother? I hear you ask. Well SoC was left on a cliffhanger and now I feel the need to know how everything turns out. So congrats Leigh you got me! I don’t plan on reading any of her other books though. For now anyway.

7) A Popular Book Trope You’re Tired Of Seeing

Easily the way young female protagonists are always ignored/pushed aside/left behind simply because they’re “little girls”. I’m pretty sure this happened in both The Hunger Games series and the Divergent series. And authors I get it. You’re setting her up to prove them wrong but it still annoys me that she isn’t listened to and gets no respect until she does something outstanding. Even in Throne Of Glass, where Celaena is the best/most deadly assassin around, the king still makes snide remarks about her being female and emotional or something! Blurghh.

8) A Popular Series That You Have No Interest In Reading

The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. I think I just missed the bandwagon with this one. And I do own the first book and I’ve tried to read it a couple times but that club scene is so long and boring! I can never get past it. Then I watched the film and thought “yawn”. Though I hear the new tv series is pretty good so maybe if I watch that it will jump start my interest?!

9) “The Book Is Always Better Than The Movie”. But Which Movie Or Tv Show Do You Like More Than The Book?

This question is so easy! The Vampire Diaries! I think I’ve read at least 8 or 9 books in the series but the tv show is just 100 times more interesting, exciting and hot (I don’t blame Elena not being able to pick between Damon and Stefan…). I really need to get Netflix asap though and catch up. I think I’m two seasons behind now and it’s killing me not knowing what’s going on.

Oh and also The Lord of the Rings trilogy would be my second pick. I adored all three films when they came out but I could not get through the books. I think I read half of The Fellowship of the Ring and gave up. Tolkien was just describing everything in too much detail for my liking. I do plan on giving them a go again one day though. Perhaps when I’m in a retirement home and I’ve read everything else…

So there you have it! What’s an unpopular opinion you have?

  1. I just bought City of Bones for $.49 at a thrift store…thought worst case scenario, I will hate it and donate it to the library, lol.
I actually liked Delirium but I read it as one of my first Dystopians, so my opinion might change if I read it again.
    Fun tag!

    1. I LOVE getting a bargain! Then yeah it doesn’t matter if you don’t really like the book. And what a great idea to donate to your library! I think I’ll look into doing that myself 😀
And I reckon if you liked Delirium the first time you read it you’d probably still like it now. It seems lots of people do still love it. I’m the odd one for not enjoying it haha. I just felt it was nothing new and a bit slow…

      1. Well, it was one of the first of that kind of story for me…if I read it for the first time now, it probably would be trope-ish. But luckily it was one of my first dystopian books…what happened was I loved THG, so I googled books like THG, and Divergent came up…there was a list of the Top Ten and so I read them all! That’s how I read Matched, Delirium, The Maze Runner, Under The Never Sky, and a couple others that I can’t think or right now…I think Uglies by Westerfeld was on there.
Fantasy didn’t even come into play until later, lol. I think it was after The Lunar Chronicles. Because of the fairy tale elements.

      2. How weird is it that we’ve all gone through the same reading phases?! I too read The Hunger Games and then all the books that were described as “for fans of THG” haha. Though I never read the Uglies series. Was it good? And then yeah in the last year or two I’ve been reading nothing but fantasy (mostly) and now I’m moving into thrillers (though I’m still LOVING fantasy).

      3. Umm, the Uglies series was interesting…I don’t know if I’d advise reading it now because the writing will seem so simplistic after all we have both read. I read it a little later and Uglies was very youthful (maybe even middle grade), but the next two were definitely edgier. I didn’t care for the fourth one, but it does have a place in the series. I say try the first one at some point and see if you can get into it?
